The Design Leader, In-House Design will lead our internal design team responsible for key brand initiatives for the Georgia-Pacific Consumer Business. The desired candidate will have day-to-day oversight and direct report responsibilities for a growing team, which now includes an account leader, graphic designers, industrial designers, production artists, external contractors and agencies to support the team. This Design Leader will drive the vision of the team, set measurable KPIs, manage talent, and ensure design excellence in all that we do.


In addition, this role will contribute to the overall vision and direction of the GP Design organization and reports to the Senior Director, Design & Packaging Innovation.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

  • Sets the overall vision of the in-house team with an eye toward future growth needs, activities, and capabilities for the design organization
  • Provide creative inspiration, direction, mentorship, coaching, guidance and performance management/reviews to design team members, ensuring each team member produces the highest quality of work which leads to value creation and positive business results
  • Nurture talent while working to grow their individual knowledge and skills
  • Connect consumer insights, cultural, retailer and market trends to deliver breakthrough design strategies for the categories, brands, and businesses
  • Initiates interaction with our business leaders, marketing, sales, research, and key stakeholders to understand project scope and develop an actionable creative strategy at the onset of assigned projects
  • Foster strong collaborative interactions across the team and cross-functional areas of the organization
  • Coach direct reports and business team in best practices managing projects from inception through the review phases of the creative plan
  • Ability to teach advanced creative evaluation principles from a design and brand building standpoint
  • Lead and champion our design thinking capability with a bias toward empathetic ideation, rapid iteration, prototyping, and testing
  • Lead and coach effective creative reviews and develop recommendations based on agreed creative strategy and design brief objectives
  • Advanced knowledge of design and packaging research techniques to drive insightful design solutions
  • Provide design thought leadership, counsel and/or support across all consumer touch points to include packaging, advertising (digital, print, TV), FSI’s, coupons, in-store, merchandising, and collateral materials.
  • Promotes a work environment that fosters design thinking, innovation, and rational risk-taking with the team
  • Observes future design and aesthetic trends in the marketplace and among competition on a regular basis to share business implications and recommendations
  • Collaborates with marketing, packaging engineering, production, legal and other functions as projects are being developed, to ensure that all appropriate resources are engaged

What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA, BFA, BS) in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and/or Visual Communication
  • Experience leading a diverse group of in-house professionals across a variety of design and creative content disciplines
  • At least 10 years of experience in managing design and packaging within the consumer products industry
  • At least 10 years design leadership and management experience within the consumer products industry

What Will Put You Ahead?

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Functional expertise within an Agency or In-House creative team
  • Expert knowledge of brand identity systems, packaging design, virtual and physical shelf merchandising
  • Experience with the product development lifecycle including, design commercialization & manufacturing

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational, communication, time management, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Attention to detail and expert experience critiquing and evaluating design
  • Ability to work in collaborative, yet highly matrixed team environment
  • Affinity to work in a fast-paced environment and within tight deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills in both Mac and PC platforms
