Quality Control Lumber Technician

Talladega, AL

 

Are you an enthusiastic team player with manufacturing or industrial experience? If so, Georgia-Pacific is looking for someone like you! We are seeking a Quality Control Lumber Technician for our mill in Talladega, AL. These highly-skilled technicians create value by focusing on maintaining high levels of quality and productivity that our Talladega mill is known for. This skilled position will support our operations efficiency through ensuring all lumber meets specified quality standards, using precision measuring tools, and immediately escalating any quality concerns or issues. This position plays a key role in ensuring the successful operation of critical assets at the mill, and gives an entrepreneurial thinker the opportunity to identify ways to improve production quantity and quality. 

 

Georgia-Pacific in Talladega produces Southern Pine dimension lumber, the workhorse of the building industry. It is an affordable, strong, durable softwood that is excellent for pressure treating, light frame construction, general utility framing, studs, pallets, crafting, and floor and roof trusses. A Day in The Life Typically Includes:

  • Ability to follow procedures for standard practices in the saw shop, including repairing/rebuilding saw guides and replacing (or assisting with replacing) saws and guides
  • Have a solid understanding of the sawmill process with the ability to troubleshoot lumber quality issues and make appropriate recommendations to operations team
  • Ability to adhere to a structured quality/saw shop schedule to ensure the mill runs smoothly and produces quality products  
  • Ability to complete quality control documentation and store/maintain on website and/or local folders
  • Ability to understand machine centers on the saw line and make necessary and appropriate offsets/adjustments to improve quality
  • Ability to work well on a team and communicate amongst team mates, production, and/or supervisor when issues arise that need to be addressed
  • Must be available and willing to work additional days or stay late if calibrations or additional quality checks are deemed necessary
  • Working with HMIs and PLCs 
  • Adhering to all plant safety and environmental guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Applying problem solving methods to identify root causes and eliminate failures

 

What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year experience in a quality control role
  • Experience working with measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, and measuring tapes, and other basic hand tools 
  • Sawmill process knowledge
  • Experience troubleshooting equipment in a manufacturing environment
  • Willing and able to maintain strict adherence to safety rules and regulations, to include wearing safety equipment; e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and other PPE as required by specific job
  • Willing and able to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs., walking, climbing, stooping, standing, pushing and/or pulling for up to 12 hours a day 
  • Willing and able to work in a hot, humid, cold, and noisy industrial environment
  • Willing and able to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and overtime as required
  • The ability to successfully use a computer without assistance to complete assigned tasks
  • Problem solving skills

 

What Will Put You Ahead?

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience operating and interpreting HMIs and PLCs in a manufacturing environment
  • Lumber or wood products manufacturing experience
  • Experience performing machine maintenance
