Koch Fertilizer, LLC. (KAES) is seeking a highly motivated Instrument Controls Engineer to become part of the Reliability team at our fertilizer plant of about 80 employees near Ft. Dodge, IA. The Instrument Controls Engineer will work cross functionally with Koch Reliability, Operations, Maintenance, and EH&S teams and will be responsible for ongoing controls system optimization for the Ft. Dodge plant, including management of small projects and providing capital project support for instrumentation and controls. The successful applicant will report to the Reliability Leader.



A Day In The Life Typically Includes: 

  • Provide consultation to project managers on process control equipment applications
  • Work with project managers and engineering contractors to develop control strategies, specify DCS/SIS hardware and specify instrumentation
  • Manage small projects for instrumentation controls
  • Yokogawa DCS, SIS, HMI, and Allen Bradley PLC programming
  • Simulation system development and testing
  • Provide operator training for new systems and installations
  • System commissioning and startup assistance
  • Documentation and validation of systems and applications
  • Troubleshoot and develop repair strategies for new and existing plant controls equipment
  • Assist with development of outage scopes and support outages throughout all stages


What You Will Need: (Basic Qualifications)


  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience developing control schemes
  • Do you have a B.S. in Engineering or related field OR 3+ years’ experience in controls programming or instrumentation with a high school diploma?
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends, and occasional callouts as needed to support the plant
  • Willing and able to wear all necessary PPE (hard hat, boots, glasses, FR’s, leather gloves, etc.) 
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and work at heights of approximately 25-100 ft
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Unassisted physical mobility around a plant
  • Ability to sit, stand or kneel as needed



What Will Put You Ahead: (Preferred Qualifications)


  • Design, implementation, and programing experience with Yokogawa (or equivalent) DCS and SIS control systems in chemical process facilities
  • Allen Bradley PLC programming capability
  • Field instrumentation selection/specification experience
  • Functional safety knowledge
  • Working knowledge of LOPA, C&E’s, SRS, and SIL ratings
  • Knowledge of process industry standards and codes, i.e. OSHA, ISA, IEC, NFPA, etc.
  • Project management experience
  • B.S. in Chemical or Electrical Engineering
