Control System/PLC Engineer 


Rosemount, MN

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

As Digital Maintenance Engineer, you will work to develop equipment strategies for the control system hardware, two-way communication systems and associated networking equipment. This role will also provide project support to capital and maintenance projects by ensuring adherence to engineering standards, supporting the change management process, and providing economic analysis to technology alternatives. Additionally, this role will develop work scopes that are based on sound and economically viable repair/replacement decisions via the workflow process. An ability to identify, develop and champion improvements in the workflow process is expected. Experience with failure analysis methodologies and application to problem solving on a micro and macro level are desired. As a member of the Digital Team, you will also be required to participate as a member on the Digital On-Call rotation schedule to cover after-hour, weekend, and holiday troubleshooting/repair activities. Demonstrable skills in critical and economic thinking and capturing this through strong written and verbal communication skills are required in this role. The ability to identify, develop and champion improvements in the reliability capabilities of the organization is greatly desired.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Development of equipment reliability strategies (equipment selection, preventative maintenance, monitoring, obsolescence, etc.)

  • Measuring performance of the systems and equipment against functional expectations

  • Researching and developing points-of-view on new and emerging technologies

  • Collaborating with control system hardware vendors on issues and system patching

  • Replacing faulty cards, CPUs, power supplies etc.

  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and correcting PLC/DCS communication problems

  • Minor PLC ladder logic or HMI (human machine interface) graphics programming for modifications to existing software

  • Preventative maintenance scheduling and coordination 

What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications: 

  • BS in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or similar technology

  • Familiarity with networking communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet and TCP/IP as well as hardware

  • Good understanding of programming documentation processes and procedures

  • Good understanding of the engineering documents associated with PLC/DCS and digital equipment such as electrical drawings, logic drawings, P&IDs, Cause and Effect tables etc 

What Will Put You Ahead?

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 4+ years of process/operations/reliability work experience in a petroleum refinery

  • 4+ year of process/operations/reliability work experience in an industrial facility

  • Basics of industrial hardware and programming (function block, structured text and ladder logic)
